Thunder 102 and WRWD join forces for regional Radiothon.

Shoprite stores, River Reporter, Sullivan and Orange County government centers  provide ground support

The Committee for the Families of Iraq and Afghanistan War Vets, an ad-hoc regional 501 C not-for-profit dedicated to raising funds for neighborhood families, is coordinating the event which will take place Saturday, August 22nd from 8 AM to 5 PM at the Sullivan County Airport.   “We are extremely grateful for the generosity of Liberty-based Thunder 102 and the River Reporter for offering to stage and promote this event,” remarks Ray McCarthy, spokesperson for The Committee.”

Thunder 102 has already raised the bar, inviting Poughkeepsie-based WRWD to join in raising awareness and funds for families that have suffered losses in these conflicts.

Eighteen Shoprite stores throughout the regions quickly stepped forward to provide Valley residents a chance to participate. Dollar-Donation cards will be sold at the check-out counters. There is a place on each card to write in a soldier’s name. The cards will then be displayed. Plus, there are a variety of in-store events, like flea markets, planned at various locations to add to the customer donations. “Shoprite is dedicated to the community by providing local produce and promoting local vendors. We know we are ideally positioned to support this event, and we’re happy to give back to the families of troops in our region,” remarks_________________________________________.

Orange and Sullivan Counties will also support the event by soliciting donations from government workers, networking through veteran organizations and more.

The momentum is building. Villa Roma, a Sullivan County Resort, has already began selling Dollar-donation cards for two dollars a piece—twice the suggested price. Within hours, visitors to the tourist destination had purchased all available cards. “Some are putting them on the windows of their cars to show support,” remarks__________________.

“It’s clear that people throughout the Valley have wanted to support our troops, but often didn’t know how. With the conflict escalating in Afghanistan and continuing in Iraq, we believe our troops and their families need our support now more than ever,” Mr. McCarthy adds.

Volunteers are needed for phone banks. Businesses are invited to sell dollar-donation cards. Please contact Event Organizer Al Frangipone at 845-583-6540 for more information and to volunteer.
